Sorry, I couldn’t help but make a post about the potential comeback for vinyl records which is being proposed by this article on wired (magazine) online.
Those of you who know me well also would know that I am a fan of collecting old records. I’ve amassed well over 50 albums in the past four years (I’m a bit picky about what I buy and what conditions it is in).
I’m also biased towards Australian/New Zealand music (from the 80s, specifically), e.g. Hoodoo Gurus, Midnight Oil, Hunters and Collectors, INXS, AC/DC, Icehouse, Crowded House/Split Enz, Noiseworks etc etc.
In particular I love the fidelity and uniqueness (don’t you get the feeling that playback is different each time when you listen to an LP?) that you get from listening to uncompressed music, although it lacks the clarity found in CDs, it really just feels to me to be a bit more genuine and, of course, completely DRM-free.
Also, since many second hand records sell for between AUD $3 – $10, you’re getting a heck of a bargain compared to online music (~$1 per track). The only drawback is that you tend to need a taste in older music (the new music tracks on LP tend to be targeted at DJs and cost a fair deal more than $10 per record).
Some of my favourite LP records:
– Pink Floyd, The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon
– U2, Rattle and Hum and The Unforgettable Fire
– Dire Straits, Sultans of Swing
